Join us for the 2026 Metabolomics and Lipidomics Short Course on July 28, 29, and 30 at the University of Utah! The course is open to the CCEH community, and three slots funding tuition for the course are available through the Utah/NIDDK Center for Iron and Heme Disorders (CIHD). Travel will not be funded, but please inquire about travel arrangements as needed.
This three-day short course in metabolomics and lipidomics will introduce participants to the fundamental concepts and analytical strategies used to study small molecules and lipids in biological systems. Topics will include sample preparation and experimental design, with emphasis on minimizing variability and ensuring reproducibility, followed by in-depth coverage of analytical platforms such as liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC‑MS), and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC‑MS). The course also explores workflows for both targeted and untargeted metabolomics and lipidomics, including compound identification, quantification, and annotation challenges. Data processing, normalization, and statistical analysis are a major focus, alongside pathway and network analysis to interpret biological meaning. Additional sessions will address quality control, standardization efforts, and best practices for reporting results, as well as applications in areas such as disease biomarker discovery, systems biology, nutrition, and drug development, providing a comprehensive overview from experimental design through biological interpretation.
