U24 P&F Funding Opportunities

The NIDDK U24-supported Cooperative Centers of Excellence in Hematology (CCEH) have joined forces to provide novel support mechanisms for junior faculty, postdocs, and trainees who want to pursue new studies in non-malignant hematology. Center Directors welcome applicants from across the US and will strive to provide equal access to the cutting-edge resources and expertise available in their centers.

We are now accepting P&F Type B applications
Due March 16, 2026 (5 PM MST)!

Dr. Phillip Doerfler, PhD

Dr. Doerfler is an Associate Investigator at the Versiti Blood Research Institute in Milwaukee, and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Cell Biology, Neurobiology and Anatomy at the Medical College of Wisconsin. His long-term research goal is to enhance genetic therapies by understanding how genes are regulated and how genomes remain stable. His group focuses on two key areas: the functional genomics of hemoglobin switching, which improves clinical and biological understanding of β-hemoglobinopathies and studying how blood stem cells respond to DNA damage, particularly from genome editing tools like CRISPR-Cas9. This work is crucial for improving the safety and effectiveness of genetic therapies. Dr. Doerfler received a Type A P&F award through the CCEH in 2024 to fund his project investigating long-term genome editing safety in hematopoietic stem cells, utilizing the Fred Hutchinson Cell Procurement Core.
